Felicia, Rémi, and Floris take part in the ENIUGH conference (June 29th - July 1st)

In late July, Felicia, Rémi and Floris travelled to the Netherlands to take part in the Seventh European Congress on World and Global History 2023 in The Hague where we presented our research and discussed the project with colleagues from around the world.

For the conference we organised a dual panel entitled “Fleeing from War or Profiting from Peace: The Role of Refugees and Migrants in Technique and Technology Transfers across the Early Modern World.”

Though some of the participants to our panel were sadly unable to make the conference due to unforeseen circumstances, we still had four great papers that made for a lively discussion. The panel was convened by Felicia Gottmann and included 4 papers. Lisa Hellman discussed migrants and prisoners in the borderlands of Central Asia, Floris van Swet assessed the role of Japanese migrants as non-state actors across Southeast Asia, Rémi Dewière discussed the role of migrants in the trans Saharan transfer of firearms technology, and Philip Hahn presented a paper on the failure of technology transfer by German miners in the Dutch Indies.

The conference was a wonderful opportunity to connect with colleagues and the program was packed with stimulating panels. In particular, it was fantastic to develop dialogues through our panel and we hope these can continue!
