Key findings

The purpose of this study is to provide a better understanding of the technical and socioeconomic barriers and opportunities for using mobile phone technology and the internet to support refugees within East Africa.

The study’s overarching objective is to clarify assumptions on mobile phone and internet access by refugees in East Africa and highlight how innovations in mobile technology can be used to develop more efficient mechanisms for delivering practical support to refugees and displaced communities.

It is hoped that this study, when used by those working at the nexus of technology and migration, will lead to the development of a suite of resources and innovative mobile-based solutions that are uniquely tailored to refugees in East Africa.
